A Local Government Lens on Canada's Electrification Strategy
Canada's electrification strategy will succeed or fail at the community level. Local governments control zoning, enforce building codes, and are first to face development pressures and grid constraints, however they're too often left out of national electrification planning, even as they manage housing affordability, infrastructure gaps, and workforce shortages.
Drawing on Urban Climate Leadership's work with hundreds of leaders across local governments, utilities, industry, Indigenous communities, and more, this report sets out five priority areas for federal action, from building electrification and AI infrastructure planning to grid decarbonization and integrating municipalities as true energy partners, to strengthen Canada's economic competitiveness and energy security.
